MYSTERIES OF THE ANCIENTS AND EASTER
During Holy Week, before Easter, religious life is seething in Taranto.
Holy Week is one of the most important holidays in Taranto.
Festive events begin on Palm (Palm) Sunday. On this day, members of the two most representative religious societies of Taranto (the Carmelite Society and the Society of Our Lady of Sorrows) undergo a special selection, in which their places and roles in the processions are distributed. The Society of Our Lady of Sorrows organizes a procession of Our Lady of Sorrows, and the Carmelite Society organizes a procession of sacraments. The procession of Our Lady of Sorrows starts at midnight from Maundy Thursday to Good Friday, at the church of St. Dominic. The procession bypasses all the main temples of the Old and New City to the sounds of funeral marches. Representatives of the religious community are dressed in traditional costumes, their places and roles are clearly defined. The procession of the sacraments organized by the Carmelite Society starts at 5 pm on Good Friday. The procession leaves the Church of Our Lady of Carmel and returns there after bypassing the main streets of the New City. The procession moves very slowly, accompanied by funeral marches. Representatives of the Carmelite Society also have their own traditional costumes. By the way, according to tradition, they walk barefoot. This procession also opens with a troccola, then the images of the Passion of Christ, the image of the dead Christ and the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows follow (she appears from the doors of the temple about three hours after the start of the procession). After the statue of Our Lady is taken out of the church, the doors of the temple are closed. According to the ritual, when the procession circles the city and returns, the leader of the procession must solemnly knock on the door of the church. From that moment on, the city plunges into sorrow, which will last until Bright Sunday, when the church bells will announce the resurrection of Christ. Southern Italy has long been under the dominion of Spain, Easter customs in this Italian city resemble those of Spain.
