Basilica of San Nicola in Bari

This is a popular place of pilgrimage for the Orthodox of the whole world. Saint Nicholas is considered the patron saint of sailors, travelers and children.  Even during his lifetime, St. Nicholas became famous as the pacifier of the warring, the defender of the innocently condemned and the deliverer from unnecessary death.

There is a legend that Saint Nicholas appeared in a dream to a certain priest and said to bring his relics to Bari. The event, started by the inhabitants of the city, was a success, and on May 9 (according to the Orthodox tradition, May 22), they returned in triumph to the capital of Bari.

Inside the temple looks even bigger and more majestic than outside. Cancer with the relics of St. Nicholas is kept in the lower church. Orthodox services are held here. The relics of St. Nicholas   are among the myrrh-streaming. The tomb of St. Nicholas has a strict ascetic form. In the front part of the tomb there is a semicircular opening through which myrrh is taken out once a year.

Containers of this peace are sent around the world, and believers report numerous miracles that happen to those they anoint.

Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, travelers, usurers, children and brides. The celebration in honor of St. Nicholas takes place in the Christian world twice a year. In May (for Catholics - May 9, for Orthodox - May 22) they celebrate the day of the arrival of the relics in the city of Bari, known in folk tradition as "Spring Nicholas" and on December 6 and 19, respectively, the day of the death of the saint - "Winter Nicholas" .

To visit the cathedral would be a major event in your life, touch the shrine with the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, which have been in the crypt of the temple for 928 years. Feelings - which cannot be expressed in words and you yourself must experience!
