Carnival in the town of Massafra (province of Taranto) is one of the most important festivals in Puglia. Carnival in Massafra is not only a celebration of dance and music, during the festival you can taste local traditional dishes such as fried sausage and regional wines. It differs from other carnivals in Italy with cheerful animation, allegorical and choreographic performances, as well as a parade of papier-mâché figures on the main street of the city. According to a centuries-old tradition, Carnival this year will begin on February 1, on the day of memory of St. Anthony the Abbot, the protector of animals. The holy day was observed by everyone, and recreational activities were held, such as lighting fires in the streets, "shooting at the cheese", the game of Plenty. On the same evening, they organized a dance competition around the fire, dedicated to Bacchus and Venus. A week of music, dancing, spectacles and goodies such as fried sausages, excellent wine and, of course, carnival sweets is a good reason to have fun before the start of Lent.
